The south Okanagan and lower Similkameen study area is recognized as one of the four most endangered ecosystems in Canada due to its unique natural attributes and the rapid growth of urban and agricultural development.
With over one third of the dry grasslands and valley bottom wetlands privately held, conservation of the many species and habitats that are at risk in the area must rely on voluntary private land stewardship. Such a program of voluntary stewardship demonstrates an ethic of caring for the land and paves the way to secure key important habitat without the cost of acquisition.
For more information, see
the case study on the South Okanagan-Similkameen (SOS) Stewardship Program. Since 1994, the
SOS Stewardship Program has fostered conservation partnerships, raised awareness, demonstrated sustainable land management practices, and provided for land security in collaboration with land trusts.
